Is SEO Dead Now That People Ask AI?
· 2 min read

No. SEO is not dead; its goal has widened. When buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews, the answer is written from web pages the engine finds by searching, and Google says the same SEO practices apply to its AI features. What changes is that the answer now often sits above the links, so a page competes to be quoted in it, not only to be clicked.
Why the question comes up
AI answers now appear on a large share of searches. On 57% of the Google results pages we read across 12 industries in October 2026, an AI Overview sat above the results. A buyer who gets an answer at the top has less reason to scroll, and business owners wonder whether ranking still matters.
Why SEO still matters
An AI engine can only cite pages it can reach and trust:
- Google. Its guide to AI features and your website says a page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no extra optimization is required beyond SEO best practices.
- ChatGPT. Its search reads the web through its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
A page that search engines cannot find is not cited by their AI either. SEO is the entry ticket.
What changes
- The goal. Being one of the few sources an answer cites, not only a position in a list.
- The page. One clear answer to one question, stated early, with facts an engine can quote.
- The competition. AI answers also cite video, forums and reference sites, not only business websites.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
ChatGPT can explain SEO and draft pages. It cannot tell a business which searches its buyers make, where its pages rank or what AI answers say about its industry: that has to be measured.
What to do now
- Keep the basics. Pages indexed, crawlable by Google and by ChatGPT's crawler.
- Answer the questions buyers ask. One page per question, with the answer first.
- Check what AI says about your industry. Which searches show an AI answer, what it says and which sources it cites, as the industry cards on Epica show.
